Down-fill vs synthetic puffer — choosing the right fill

The two main puffer fill types have different performance profiles:

Decoration on puffer jackets

Puffer jackets have unique decoration requirements compared to flat-panel garments:

  • Embroidery: the most successful decoration method for puffers. Left-chest logo embroidery is standard — the baffle panel between puffer channels provides a stable enough surface for most logo work. Use a backing stabiliser specific to quilted fabrics. Avoid heavy-fill areas for complex or high-stitch-count embroideries.
  • Heat transfer and vinyl: works well on puffer outer shell panels — flat platen application over the baffle grid. Popular for event, tour and team programs where a quick turnaround is needed.
  • Screen printing: NOT recommended for puffer jackets. The quilted construction doesn't provide a flat, stable printing surface — ink adhesion and print quality are unreliable. Use heat transfer or embroidery instead.
